Bayonne’s Field of Heroes Expands Along Broadway

BAYONNE, NJ – As a new group of veterans is set to be honored by their entrance into the Board of Education’s Field of Heroes, banners depicting the pictures of all those recognized in the past have begun to appear along Broadway.

In the past, these banners were posted on property owned by the Board of Education, but the number of honorees has grown making it impossible to find space.

“I’m one of the founders of the Field of Heroes program,” said Councilman Neil Carroll III. “The Board of Education asked me as a councilman, if we could find space.”

After consulting with Mayor Jimmy Davis and Department of Public Works Director Tom Cotter, Carroll said banners would be posted along Broadway.

“You have to be nominated and accepted into the Field of Heroes to get a banner,” he said. “Still, I see this as expanding all the way up to city line (border of Jersey City) eventually.”

Last year, the banners were confined to the First Ward, but this year, the banners have breached into the Second Ward along Broadway.

“They will remain up until around Thanksgiving when the city will put up decorations for Christmas,” Carroll said.
